OVERVIEW

The global economy is an economy of cities, generating 80% of global GDP. They also account for more than 60% of global energy consumption, 70% of greenhouse gas emission and 70% of global waste. By 2050, 70% of the world population is projected to live in urban areas, placing huge pressure on natural capital, infrastructure, environment, work and food supply chains. Against this backdrop, Indonesia is undertaking an ambitious project to relocate its capital city to Borneo, focusing its development around the principles of a Green and Smart City.

This initiative explores how cities can transition to a low-carbon, resilient, nature-positive and inclusive built environment, and how Indonesia’s new capital city development aims to embed this vision in its development.

Green Nusantara New Capital

The new capital, Nusantara, to be developed in East Kalimantan, is envisioned as a green and smart global city that is carbon-neutral and inclusive. Technology and innovation will play key role in incorporating sustainable features such autonomous transportation, urban construction that retains rainwater providing water source while mitigating floods, food supply resilience industries, green spaces for public walking and cycling with a large tract of the city dedicated to forest and greeneries.

The Green Industrial Park

Situated just 200 km away from the new capital is the North Kalimantan Green Industrial Park, slated to be the world’s largest green industrial area. The integrated industrial ecosystem will support the development of global green economy with ‘future’ industries powered by electricity from hydro power plants and solar energy.
